Transgender Network Berlin, May 2006

Solidarity note
for the hunger strike of transgender in Spain

The Plenum of the Transgender Network Berlin (TGNB), representing 21 Transgender Organizations and groups in Berlin, explicitly solidarizes with the Spanish transgender, going on hunger strike to fight for their legal rights.

The Transgender people Carla Antonelli and Kim Perez Fernandes-Figares from the Asociación de Identidad de Género de Andalucía (Associoation for Gender Identities in Andalusia), Gina Serra from ATC Liberdad -Asociación de Transexuales e Intersexuales de Catalunya (ATC Liberty - Association of the Transsexuals and Intersexuals in Cataloniea) and Andrea Muňiz from Transexualidad-Euskadi (Transsexuality-Basque country) declared, to go on hunger strike on the 15th of may if the Spanish government has not passed the long promised Ley de la Identidad (Gender recognition act) until that date.

The Transgender people in Germany made the same bitter experience that important and necessary reforms considering the legal recognition of Gender Identity were long promised by governments and but never undertaken, even after the German high court of justice declared some parts of the German transsexual law unconstitutional.

We strongly sympathise with the Trans-activists in Spain and we assent to the Declaration of the Steering committee of the European Transgender Network. Moreover we ask the Spanish government to pass the Ley de la Identidad instantly.

We appeal to all national and international LGBT Organisations and Human rights groups to support our demands.

We appeal to the national and international media to cover the hunger strike of Spanish activists and to report on the Spanish situation of transgender people.
